No no prior contact from the school what so ever.

That's totally ridiculous. The thing to do would have been to call the freaking parents and talk to them about the issue, maybe call them in for a meeting and explain the situation. That's how it would have been handeld a few short years ago until someone decided that school faculty should simply call the police to handle every issue they have with students and parents. Using the DA's office to inform parents they need to get their kids to school on time does nothing but sour the attitudes of both the parents and the children towards the school.

When I was in school you'd either get a look and told to sit down and shutup if you walked in late, get written up if the teacher was a hardass, or if it happened too much the teacher/principal would call home and say "Listen, Mr. Weatherby...your kid needs to get his ass to class on time. What's the deal?"

Gah I hate what they've done to our schools.

I am not sure what to tell you but a little piece of motherly advice -- no matter how mad you are DO NOT lose your cool at the school. Calm, cool and collected is the demeanor for today. You are there to gather facts and names. Take a notebook and USE it. Take everyone's name you talk to and what they say to you. DO NOT share information with them -- again you are there to gather information to use on your behalf, not give them information they may twist around later to use against you.

Wish I had more. Good luck.
I disagree, mom used storm in and set people straight. School would never call her again! Lol

I am a school teacher. The problem isn't tardies. The problem is that 3 unexcused tardies add up to 1 absence. After the child gets a given number of absences the local district attorney is contacted by the school district. Cleveland county is able to afford buses right? Put them on a bus, that way if they are late it's the bus drivers fault and the tardies are not counted. Riding to school with ma and pa is always preferrable to a kid, BUT if tardies are a problem and you have the DA breathing down your neck.... put them on a school bus.

Oh don't I know it ... I have been forever scarred by the fits my mother used to throw at the school. But school today is not like school back then. No need in making things any worse than they already are, regardless of whose "fault" it is.

OH and one more thing...... 14 unexcused absences will result in a failing grade in the class. That is the law. Put them on a bus and send them to school on time. Sorry sir, but these are the facts of life.
