Bro, from a guy who helps accident victims every day...YES YES YES. Keep UM, add medical payment coverage and understand even your own insurance company is not your friend.

As the "aggreived" party who did NOT have UM coverage (because we bought the "we have good health insurance so we don't need it") get UM and keep it ...

And the bolded part, in spades ...

I am really sorry to hear that you are having such a rough time, but I appreciate you taking the time to explain. My local guy is someone I know well and he has always done right by me on his end. That being said when I made my household claim for after the May tornados I was surprised at how he had no involvement whatsoever in the claim process & really didn't know what was going on with the claim, so that part of your situation has a distinct ring of familiarity to it. I was blessed in how little damage was done to my property and that small claim resulted in it being processed about as painlessly as possible.

If you're going to be in an accident with someone who isn't insured, the answer is yes. If you're not going to be in an accident with someone who isn't insured, the answer is no.

Yes, and I used to sign those waivers too. Let me also clarify. I used to drop UM when I had employer provided health coverage which was good, but I also purchased a bunch more of the AD&D, short term and long term disability that was available to me. Those were cheap and I don't have those now. When you are paying for stuff out of your own pocket you oddly become more informed of your needs. Funny how that works...

Very good point. I am still young enough that my health insurance is (relatively) affordable and AD&D is ridiculously cheap. Important considerations.

So if someone hits me and I dont have UM my insurance wont fix my car? I was just discussing this with my dad and he said he doesn't have it because it is so high. I cant afford much higher bills. But I dont want me or my wife to get hit and our car not get fixed.

Your collision coverage will repair your car. You would have to pay your deductible. UM doesn't apply to property damage. In some states, there is a UMPD, but that's not an Oklahoma thing.
