Hello David, Beautiful buck and great shot!!! Glad one of us got out today and scored. I may not be able to make it out for a while, took a tumble in the yard yesterday and bent my left knee backwards. Gonna have it looked at in the morning. Hopefully I can get out in a couple weeks. My venison supply is getting low.:mad::cry11:

I'm more curious why you sat there for 45 minutes watching him die instead of shooting him a second time.

This was my and my wifes question. I'm not going to preach. but letting this animal die slowly over 45 minutes because you didn't take stock of the number of bolts you had was irresponsible.

lose one corner of your man card.

Well, at least it didn't run and jump the fence, to never be recovered....

Thank you Mr. Frank...

Sorry to hear about your leg. That sounds awfully painful. I sure hope your doctor tells you nothing is damaged beyond repair. Get well and hollar at me when you get a chance and I'll find a stand to put you on....

Mistakes happen guys. No need to bash DT over not having another arrow. It's part of hunting, it's unfortunate but it happens. I'm sure the deer dies the same way, whether it dies in front of you or 100 yards away. Plus, still a possibility of the deer getting spooked and running away. Sure he had a pretty good hit, but I've shot deer and have seen them run hundreds of yards away with 3 legs and bleeding out.

Thank you Porter....

I'm not going to make any excuses for the deer I shot. I sunk the arrow exactly where the crosshairs were, my deer dropped, I have meat, end of story...

My sentiments on the subject are that obviously the situation wasn't perfect. You probably had to waste a little meat with that shot placement, and the deer had to sit there for 45 minutes. But given your situation you did fine, and mistakes happen as far as only having one bolt. Like someone else said, the only difference between your mistake of forgetting extra bolts and him running 100 yards off is you had to watch him lay there and bleed out. Given that scenario, I would have just sat still too I think for fear of him jumping and running. Only if I was POSITIVE that he couldn't run would I have got down to dispatch him with a knife. Kudos on the kill.

Now the rest of you chumps need to post some pics and stories so I can live vicariously through you!!!!

Thank you Sticky!

This is the largest buck I have ever killed, as well as one of the heaviest. Given a choice though, I would rather have had a 100 pound doe in front of me, but at least now, I've got a good pair of rattling horn's for the next hunt...

I don't know if this is any indication of that kind of Winter we are going to have but, this deer had the heaviest layer of fat I have ever seen on a deer. I've shot deer towards the end of season, with snow and ice on the ground, that never had as much fat as what this deer had...

I just got back from the store where I had my deer weighed at and Bill told me that he just got his scale re-calibrated and said the weight on my deer would have accurately weighed in at 172 lbs. making this THEE heaviest deer I have killed to date....
