I've been here for a year now. I've read the regs several times and seem to get the impression that any hunting in the state needs a license of some sort (except feral hogs at some times). I've had 2 different people tell me that on private land I can hunt and shoot coyotes without a license and even at night with lights if i want. The regs clearly state at night only with a .22rimfire without lights or sighting aids.

I don't know if i'm reading it too broad or if I'm missing the section that says on private land no real regulations?

Please help me understand this.

A lot of it depends on what and why you're shooting--f'rinstance, you can shoot damn near anything at any time if you're defending your livestock, yourself, or your family, and you have fairly broad leeway in eradicating destructive varmints around your home.

Hopefully, some of the more knowledgable guys will chime in, but if all else fails, you can ask the ODWC or your local game warden for an authoritative answer...

Yes you better have an hunting license if you are hunting anything other than feral hogs on private owned land. If you are protecting your livestock from coyotes you are not hunting, you are protecting your livestock.

As far as lights at night for coyotes, it is possible with written consent from your county game warden.

Easy answer is just go buy a license. That way you have no questions and no worry. On top of that your helping out the wildlife dept. just a little bit.

Im pretty sure if you actually own the land, then you just need the appropriate tag. Otherwise your good.

On the nightime coyote deal - I haven't done that with the written consent form for 30+ years, but one of the restrictions on that used to be shotgun only with no larger than #6 shot.

Hiding from all you crazy people!!!
Like said above, illegal to "hunt" at night.
As for hunting at night, your local GW can give you a night shooting/hunting permit if you have a good reason to need one. Lots of restrictions can come with that permit though, and it's all at the GW discretion.
I remember being told that if you own the property you don't need a license to hunt, but you still have to buy tags for big game animals. Don't quote me on that though....

22 at night is only during fur season and only when you are using hounds. As far as coyotes go you can get a permit from your local warden but you will be limited to shotgun only with no shot larger than #6 shot. You must list anyone on the permit that will be hunting with you and exactly where you will be hunting. You must get it 24 hours in advance and it's only good for 24 hours. For coyotes it's not up to the game warden if you get it or not but hogs I've been told is a different story.
You would be better off going during the day for coyotes so you're not so limited.
