I am not trying to prove any bias (or “prejudice” as you mentioned earlier) at all.

The question …can people have a secular based objection to same sex marriage?

The answer is yes. They don't have to be of any religious belief to object.

Does not matter if their secular reasoning is any more or less “logical” than one who goes to church three times a week. Ut does not matter in the least if it disagrees with what one would define as a "illogical".

The point is that there are people that oppose same sex marriage not based on religious beliefs.

To say that ONLY those that object have a religious basis is wrong.

Yet you cannot provide that this is a halmark argument from atheists or agnostics? Can you provide that like many arguments against gay marriage, this one isn't masked from it's roots?

The biological and "social" argument laid forth here could be based upon religious beliefs as someone that was completely devoid of religion SHOULD be able to see the other scientific and social counterpoints that easily disprove said argument.

You're going a long ways to justify bigotry. It's ok to think that homosexuals are icky, it's not ok to exclude them from the benefits married couple enjoy because gay sex is gross.

How did I justify "bigotry"? I am not against same sex unions in the least. I have always believed that no matter what orientation one chooses they should have the same rights ... nothing more and nothing less than anyone else. It should be a no brainer.

I am saying that it's not only those "of the Book" that oppose same sex marriages and that there are more than religious based reasons (right, wrong or indifferent) to be opposed.

I will go as far as saying that if marrying RidgeHunnter makes you happy, let me know what pharmacy you guys are registered at and I will send you a gallon of Astroglide.

And I will ask why does something have to affect one for one to have an opinion?

When a majority(mob rule) make an attempt to block or otherwise deny certain rights, freedoms and benefits extended to some couples based on those opinions, it matters because that directly affects those attempting to gain equal standing. If you can't reasonably articulate how it negatively affects you, why do you get to decide what is good for them. If two consenting adults who love each other and want to share their lives together(their wealth, taxes, inheritance, child rearing, hospital visits, important medical decisions, etc.), who are you to stop them? (speaking in general not directly about you).

I 100% agree with you that the government should not be involved. However they are(and I don't see that changing), and as long as they are, the rights and benefits that come with a committed relationship(marriage), should be forwarded to all couples regardless of their sexual orientation. The people who disagree with that are failing to provide validation(i.e how does it affect them).

I am not even trying to make that point so why would I provide such?

That an atheist providing a secular rationale is a closeted Christian or Muslim?

The biological and "social" argument laid forth here could be based upon religious beliefs as someone that was completely devoid of religion SHOULD be able to see the other scientific and social counterpoints that easily disprove said argument.

Again, I am not defending nor have I condoned any secular rationalization to being against same sex marriage. I am only saying that one does not have to be of any faith to be against it. It is moot if their rationale is logical or credible.

Secondary point is that people are intolerant of anyone who opposes same sex marriage for whatever the reason … as illustrated when the pots met the kettles on this thread.

So long as you're willing to admit that your opinion is emotion based and doesn't have a practical foundation, you're good.

As for my relation to Ace, you'd be forgiven if you thought we were siblings, considering how much we fight. :)

As a so called "Bible Thumper", whatever that means, gay marriage will not affect my life unless they penalize churches or pastors for refusing to accommodate gay marriages. According to my Bible, looking with lust, shacking up, and rubbing one out, along with homosexuality, is a sin. The problem with legalizing gay marriage is by doing so you re-define the God instituted definition of marriage which eliminates the objective point of reference for morality, which is God's law. Why is it wrong to kill, steal, or rape? According to an atheistic worldview there can be no such thing as right or wrong. I may think it's fine to be a serial killer, and you may not. Without an objective point of reference of morality everything becomes opinion. From an atheistic worldview, the life of a fly is just as important as an infant human. I know some real nice gay people, a lot nicer than some people I've known in church. At my jewelry store I'll sell them rings and treat them nice as I would any customer. If they want the economic benefits of marriage I have no problem with that. My problem is with the re-defining of what marriage truly was meant to be and ramming that s%#! down my throat (no pun intended) every time I turn on the TV or read the news.

If you can't reasonably articulate how it negatively affects you, why do you get to decide what is good for them.

Ideally the vote in a constitutional republic should decide.

The people who disagree with that are failing to provide validation(i.e how does it affect them).

Let’s say the only firearm you own is your grandmother’s single shot 22LR. Should you have an opinion on gun control regarding magazines that hold 30+ rounds? I contend that an issue does not have to have an effect on one for one to be for it or against it.

People do not need to placate what you think as logical. They are entitled to have a reason no matter how “illogical” you want to call it.

Back to point. Not everyone opposed to same sex marriages is opposed on religious grounds.
