It was likely an error in the captioning algorithm, but it was totally apropos. I’ve been looking for a complete version with captioning, but so far, there aren’t any CC versions online. Oh, to have that screen shot - it would go viral!
OK, I found a captioned version of the complete conference, and I went through the part several times where he “said” that. As I expected, it’s not there any more, but the captioning each time was slightly different in response to some unclear language he used while talking about China. What a pity...
ETA: I found the part, which was later in the conference and he referred to China. The captioning this time said,
“... he understands, he makes no pretense about not understanding what I’m saying anymore to him...”
This was in the video put on YT by The Hill. I prefer the original version
