So why haven't we been back to the moon since the days of slide rules? (I'd bring up projects like the SR-71, too, but that's been superceded by satellites.)

The first stage, as in the ascent, yes...the jump will be the man and his suit. Granted a much fancier suit then Joe had (tool box strapped to his a## to keep him from tumbling, lol).
