.45acp.....350ft/lbs of energy(230gr)
10mm......750ft/lbs of energy(200gr)
640ft/lbs w/230gr (approx.?)
+1 on that, 2x's the ft/lbs of energy. Kinda looks like a nuclear bomb going off in ballistic gelatin. :cannon:

is 10mm worth all the extra trouble?
it's not like .45 acp has any stopping problems

my CCW is already a .357 that weights 12oz with CT
so for self defense not much chance 10mm will be needed.

Balistically, the 10mm is similar to the .41 Magnum revolver round.
Unfortunately for the handgun hunters, most 10mm are 150 yard cartridges in a 50 yard gun. Lots of power, but gun lacks long-range accuracy.

For defense, its a similar problem. Unless you're dirty harry, you might not want to carry around a .44 magnum or a 10mm.
So the 10mm continues as a specialy round with fervent advocates, but in sheer numbers sold lacks the popularity of the .45 ACP in semi-autos and the appeal of the .44 magnum revolver for hunting.

The shortened 10mm (.40 S&W) was develped by a handloader at the FBI labs because their experiment with full-power 10mm resulted in very low qualification rates. Then the popularity of the .40 S&W took off when manufactures started fitting it into 9mm combat tupperware platforms, and departments could get more power and good qualification rates with a lighter gun.

Can't wait to see what comes next in the parade.......

can't imagine what a PITA chasing 10mm brass as it goes flying.
with .45 acp if you lose a few, so what...

10mm ammo is so expensive, reloading would be mandatory.
but one has to keep track of the brass ...

Actually I've found them to be about the same in cost. 10mm is just a little more difficult to track down. Even then its not that tough to find.

10mm is an extraordinarily flexible cartridge.
Most factory loads are at or just above the best .40 S&W loads, but much stronger loads are available.
With the notable exception of the Glock 29/30 set most pistols chambered for 10mm hold and additional round or 2 compared to the equivalent .45 model.
As to over-penetration, I don't think the penetration capability is any more than a .357 Magnum. Would you feel over-gunned with a .357 Magnum in a defensive situation? The 10mm was designed to meet FBI specifications for ideal performance in a defensive pistol, I think they did well.

The expense is a definite downside.
