I usually let the little ones walk by, to each his own I guess. LOL Nice Buck! Bassin. I just wish I could still bow hunt, alot of good times, hunted 20 yrs real hard but 2 shoulder surgeries and I'm done.
The legalization of crossbows has allowed a lot of folks to get into or get back into hunting archery season. I tore my right bicep about 15 years ago and never got it fixed, so pulling a vertical bow was a dealbreaker for me. I bought a used crossbow as soon as it was legal, and it’s actually become my hunting weapon of choice. Not saying it would work for you, but if you really want to get back into hunting archery season, it would be something to consider. :anyone:

I have purchased a crossbow a couple years ago but to me it is not the same. I mean the effort and time put in to be proficient with a recurve and instinctively shooting. Have hunted with a compound bow that also requires fine tuning to be proficient. I guess for me it wasn't always about the killing of game but the journey of mastering the method. The taking of game was a measurement of your success. A crossbow takes that out of it for me, set it up, dial in the scope and never practice, pick it up a year later shoot it hits the bullseye. Where is the challenge I guess is what I'm saying. Don't know, just never could get into it.

"Lopsided" stepped into an opening at 30 yards this morning at 7:47. I made some noise when rushing to get ready and he stopped. His body was behind the tree, but his head was fully visible and he was trying to stare me down. After what seemed like forever being frozen he turned his head back down the trail and quickly took 3 more steps. My movement to get in shooting position caught his attention and he paused again, slightly quartered to me 30 yards away. I knew I had to be behind the shoulder, but tucked in close to try and get both lungs. My tracking experience has proven a shoulder hit with archery is not good. I use a Slick Trick Magnum 4 blade fixed and its laser point accuracy hit its mark with a beautiful thump sound. Within a few feet the buck was out of sight, but not out of hearing distance. Within seconds of the shot, I could hear the beast gasp for his last breath and collapse on the forest floor. I forced myself to stay in the tree for 30 minutes as giving the animal time is crucial with archery equipment and I needed some time to wind down. I wouldn't hesitate to give an archery deer longer, but I knew where I hit and what I heard in the moments after. I could also see the buck through the trees once I put feet on the ground.View attachment 229622

I fell off a ladder in 2001 back when you still had to have a letter from your doc to hunt with a xbow. I had literally just bought a new compound the week before too. The torn ACL kept me from ever getting to shoot it.
That sucks! I can't do it now but I cherish the memories of just practicing with mine not to mention the hunts. The 30 minutes each day I practiced was my solace I guess you could say.

Had this young dude with tons of character walk by me at under 20 yards yesterday. Hopefully he makes it through the season. I think he'll be pretty decent next year.
