I like that rifle; sounds like you did well. I have a Remington Rolling Block in .30-40 Krag that I've been thinking about getting re-barreled into a different caliber (it had already been partially 'smithed and re-barreled before I acquired it, so it's no loss to do it again). I was thinking .223 or .308, but I don't have a big-bore rifle yet...

I have a 1.75-5x on mine. I have the standard rifle with the 22 or 24 inch barrel I really want to try some hard cast heavies in it. But the 300s shot real well so I won't experiment till I get some more brass.

Here's mine. *Please excuse my $75 beater pickup*

My dad has 3,he only had 1 for a while but he liked it so much he bought two more... Said it was so each of us sons could have one after he passes. Of course I probably shoot them more than he does these days, he's to busy working out of town to get to the range. Great rifle.

I already have imr 4895 and varget, so I will probably start there. I put a 1-4 power scope on it for now. I dislike the factory sights, may put peeps on it before long.

I've not really found any smokeless powder that shoots "bad" in my .45-70 side by side, 1874, Ruger No. 1 and a friends Marlin.\
IMR-3031 is my go to powder for all but the No. 1. In the No. 1 I like RL 7 with 300gr bullets, and H4895 with 400gr.

IMR3031 does well with all bullets weights in the 4570. IMR4895 and IMR4064 do really well with the 300 and 400's with a tad more speed than the IMR3031.

The only thing I've shot cast and BP out of is my 1874...........I know Pulp, I know. :)

I don't know if Mitch at J&K Bullet Casters still makes his 400gr lead bullet for the 45-70 but I used them for quite a long time before I sold my gun (stupidest idea ever, miss it still) for an AR. I've got my load data in my notebook still.

Every time I see a .45-70 I immediately remember when I shot a Coyote with a 400gr pill.

Closest thing I've ever seen to a "Hollywood" effect - it literally spun that coyote 5' and it landed on its side.

Unbelievable power in that round, I couldn't imagine shooting a .45-120
