A fix to Oklahoma CCW law, instead of an open carry law?

Based on many of the posts in this thread alone it is everyone else I am not sure of.

Yep. I'm just trying to keep it in a language they understand. Sometimes, people only understand if you do it wrong.

I think it has something to do with the education system.

I am the director of OK2A. OK2A was the only RKBA organization supporting Open Carry at the Capitol earlier this year. I can tell you that no legislators claimed the NRA was supporting Open Carry last year becasue the NRA was no where to be found. We would have all loved for them to have joined the party, but alas, they did not - even after some legislators tried to get them invovled. If they were not going to support it, I wish they would have just stayed out of it; that would have been far better than what they did. They sent a letter to Rep. Tibbs saying that Open Carry was not their priority. Our Constitutional right is not their priority!? That statement gave Dan Sullivan and Pam Petterson (both Republican moderates) the cover they needed, along with the likes of Glen Bud Smithson (who said anyone who wants to open carry is a coward - oh, by the way, the NRA endorsed him for re-election) the cover they needed to oppose the bill. Not to mention, it allowed Brad Henry to say he was pro-Second Amendment while vetoing the bill.

You probably know more about the details of last year than I know, since you were involved and I was not. I will be more involved this year and and it is my understanding that the NRA will be involved also.

I don't know about any letters sent, but I believe we will see a bill that will cover open carry and I believe it will pass and will become law. I think we all need to work together to that end, the NRA and your organization, the OK2A as well as individuals and not pull in different directions.

"Right" and "Privilege" are used interchangeably quite often on this forum. Because of that, I was trying to avoid the obligatory reply whining "but were talking about Second Amendment RIGHTS! not PRIVILEGES!"

:gun1:

I think you knew that I know there is a difference. ;)

Over the 200+ years since the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights were adopted, the courts have taken away many of our rights granted under those documents. Of course that is not and should not be acceptable to those of us who believe in a strict interpretation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

So we can whine about the loss of those rights and claim that we should have them, but that won't get them back for us, will it? Or we can work together to change those rights back from "privileges" to rights. Just saying they are rights does not make them available to us.

The opposition, the liberals if you will, feel just as strong that those are not rights and will fight to keep the status quo, at the very least, or will fight to take away more of our rights.

So if we want to have the Second Amendment to be a right again, we need to all work together to make it so. It will not happen otherwise.

I just want to point out that a strict interpretation of the Constitution reads the Bill of Rights as protecting Natural Rights of Man, not granting.

It is a very important difference.

Something that is granted can always be taken away, and the interpretation that the Bill of Rights grants Privileges of United States Citizens is why we are where we are today.

I don't know what in the world their problem would have been. They never said we have a problem with this provision or that provision. They said the bill wasn't their priority. I wonder if we aren't seeing a similar situation as what happened with Senator Coburn's parks amendment. The NRA opposed it until they saw it was going to pass. Then they jumped on board.

There is more than one version of Open Carry being submitted this year. As far as I know, they all either mirror Rep. Duncan's bill from last year or the Arizona style bill. Both were also submitted last year and the NRA wouldn't support either one.

Don't get me wrong. I believe the NRA has done some good things, but when it comes to legislation and endorsements their recent record stinks to high heavens. They wouldn't support any of the Constitutional bills from last session (only supported hunting bills). The Disclose Act. They endorsed Rep. Smithson for re-election this year (thankfully he lost). Smithson was the one who, while debating against open carry on the floor, said anyone who wants to open carry is a coward. The NRA endorsed him! I'm sorry, but I don't have much faith in the NRA. I hope they prove me wrong. I'd love to work with them rather than against them. But, I suppose we will see in a few months.

This ^^^^

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to read the BOR and know that it was put into place as a safeguard. The first 5 amendments to the BOR tells the government what it cannot do. 6 and 7 tell the government what it must do to protect the right to trial by jury in both criminal and civil cases. 8 is another don't do while 9 and 10 essentially say if the constitution doesn't say the government can do it then it can't but the states can and just because the constitution doesn't mention a right the people still got 'em.

It really is an easy to understand and simple document.
Unfortunately lawyers and law makers over the past 220 years have gone and mucked it up by trying to read more into it than is there.

The fact that so few of us actually know what the BOR really does is very sad. Goes back to what many here say that we get the government we deserve.

They win, we lose.

ASIDE: Start a poll. Ask if the 2nd amendment grants us the right to keep and bear arms. Y or N...

Even here there will be many who respond Y.

I do give the benefit that most people probably attended public school (just like me). The textbooks teach that Rights are granted by the Constitution.

It's another reason why our kids will be homeschooled.

There was a poll not long ago that suggested the the BOR granted us rights under the 2A. Most gun owners chose Y.

God above gives rights. The BOR simply reaffirms this simple fact. The populace as a whole is a mass of lemmings headed for a cliff. So long as they feel "safe and protected" by government in it's many forms... they're happy.

34 other states allow open carry. It does not cause problems or create havoc.

Why are you so quick to compromise? Compromise is what got us in this mess to begin with...

How 'bout restoring the 2nd Amendment which confers our R2KBArms? Stop compromising, and stop deciding for me how I should carry my tool to protect me and my family.

+1. I don't care what any damned hand wringers opinion is. The fix is open carry legislation and a little while after that constitutional carry (i.e. no permit required). "Disruptive"? Only for sissies.

Like others here I'd choose not to open carry, but enjoy the fact that if my weapon flashed while concealed the officer would tell the reporting person that they need to get over it because I'm legally carrying.

As for businesses becoming no carry zones, I welcome the POS's to let me know their ignorant opinion so I don't make the mistake of handing them any of my money.
