Either IPSC matches or any of the local Steel Challenges are great fun ... I like the instant gratification of hitting steel but the IPSC matches you get to run around at so it is pretty much a toss up for me.
We let a youngster shoot IPSC out at Arcadia with his .22 last year, I think. The look on his face while he was shooting with the "big guys" was priceless.
I first started USPSA as a way to improve my confidence because if there was every anyone who was uncomfortable handling a gun it was me.
At my first match I spent more time in the bathroom puking than I did shooting I was so nervous.Now you won't see me without one ... (although most of the time you won't know I have it unless I tell you, of course.)
