the 270 is just the 30-06 with the neck of the case necked down to 27 caliber.25-06 same thing,35 whelen is 30-06 necked up to 35 caliber, 400 whelen same thing,338-06 same thing.shorten 30-06 about a inch and you have the 308 winchester, neck down to 7mm and you get 7mm-08,neck down to 6mm and you get .243.its too expensive to make a new cartridge from scratch, so most of the time the ammo and gun makers just take a exsiting cartridge and modify it, and presto a NEW round.270 is a great round, smaller calibers just limit you to lighter bullets, you just need to figure out how heavy a bullet you will NEED, and get a round thats good with that bullet weight, carefull though just because a certain round is offered with a heavy bullet doesnt mean it will shoot good with that heavy a bullet.if you need a certain bullet weight and its the heaviest offered in that caliber, i would go up in caliber, some guns dont shoot well at thier heaviest bullet weight, 30-06 ammo is offered in 200 and 220 grain JSP, some rifles will shoot that weight good some wont,it too all depends on the range your going to shoot also,up close no longer than 100 yards, then 3 MOA will do, but not at 300 or farther.

I called today. They said that price is no longer valid. They said it was a misprint and corporate has corrected it. The Tulsa store had .270 and 7mm-08 only and they were $249 each. Still probably not a bad price, but not like $179.
