Nah totally normal. That’s a fluted barrel. Y’all ever heard how some bullets like to jump to the lands? This guys bullets prefer to jump all the way to the muzzle.

I'll bet those flutes acted like a safety valve releasing a lot of pressure whereas a regular barrel would have exploded in one direction or maybe even forcing the bolt backward.
