I think you are somewhat off base. The forecast as late as this afternoon was that Ossoff had the edge by a couple of points in polling, that the funding which had heavily favored him was instrumental in gaining that lead, and that this was likely to be seen as a rebuke to Pres. Trump. The first two were proven wrong in the end, the last was never (IMHO) correct because local elections tend to be about local issues both Dems and Reps will exaggerate the importance of these by-elections to suit their narrative.
Interesting. Which polls gave Ossoff an edge?

Not sure if some are being coy or not. The significance is that the DNC poured a TON of money into a district to see if they could buy a seat with a virtually unknown candidate that didn't even live there. A majority of the money came from California.

"Didn't even live there" is technically true, but misleading. He was born and raised there, his family still lives there, and he still has substantial connection to the district. He lives a mile and a half away while his (girlfriend? fiancée?) finishes med school. It's not like, say, Hillary running for office from New York.
