Here, but occasionally There.
First, to respond to the OP, my primary hobby is photography.

Back in the '60's, I bought an inexpensive acoustic guitar and "kind of" played with that for several years. Since I can't read music, most of what I did was playing by ear.

Now, having said that, and in reference to Mr10mm's questions, why is there a need for an electric if she is just beginning to learn? Unless she is going to be playing with others with electrics, I don't see why she couldn't begin to learn with a good acoustic. Then you wouldn't be out the cost of an amp and speaker(s) as well as the guitar.

Back when I was playing, a cousin of mine had a 12-string acoustic. That had an awesome sound, although I think it took more to get it in tune.

Sometimes electrics are recommended for beginners because they are easier on the fingers as they use lighter gauge strings. Not saying I agree with it though. Its an age old argument.

BTW I am a Bass-tard instead of a Guitard

Hi, I'm new here. Just wondering if there are any guitar players as well as gun owners? I play an Eric Johnson Fender Stratocaster and also have a 62 Re-issue Stratocaster made in Fenders Custom Shop. Any other interests? Hobbies? I also build armor model kits from various conflicts throughout history.

Guitar player here too. Taught myself, hence not that good. :) I also like photography. Canon cameras. I have actually been paid three times to shoot weddings with a co-worker.

How do you like the EJ strat compared to normal strats? I have a Tacocaster. I've never liked the string trees and am curious to try the EJ strat.

Yep, Pros and cons on both electric or acoustic. Electrics are usually easier on the fingers, which might prompt more practice. Many cheaper acoustics have higher string action which makes it harder to fret strings for a beginner, but it also builds more finger/hand strength. This is good if the person can tough it out. My opinion is to buy the type of instrument for the music you want to play most. Or get a job that pays well enough that you can buy all the guitars you want. :D

I learnt on nylon. To be specific, I took classical lessons. (By the way, an inexpensive source for good music lessons is college students working on their Master's in Music Ed.)

I'm a heavy-gauger on my electrics. I'm still looking for an affordable fla fretboard electric. I love the flat fretboard on my classical, and my steel string acoustic is close enough to be tolerable, as is the fretboard on my 7-string Strat, but the radius is too tight on my Tele.

I probably should get a bass. Anytime I go looking to feed my desire to play in a band again, everyone wants me to play bass. So the only times I play with other people now are fill-ins a couple of times a year on bass, but I've got a friend that lets me borrow his well-worn '67 P-Bass.

Ya she already got a acoustic last week, Her mom bought it without taking her and the neck is to big for her hands. We went to jenkins and looked at some and of course she wants electric and the guy did say if she does not want to play acoustic and I make her she will probably loose interest. The guy did say the one her mother picked out was tradicial style and hard to learn on. I tried to get her to check out the takemine's but she was having no part of that.

I play guitar, banjo, fiddle, piano, and trumpet.

Before you buy a new Mex Strat, look around at pawn shops. Some are a rip off, but many have decent "less expensive" guitars (import Fenders, Epiphones, Ibenez, and so on) for $100 to $150.

If you come to OKC often, PM me, and I might help you find one. We can set it up ( a good set-up is EVERYTHING), put on new strings, and so on. I've been playing since the 8th grade. I'll be 42 next month. Not sure how many years that is. 30, maybe? Crap. I'm aging!

I also play a Strat - American Series, 50th anniversary model that is Olympic White, just like one of my hero's.

I learned to play under the guidance of a catholic nun as a kid, who scared me to death. Come to think of it, that's not when I really learned to play but it was when I learned to feign I was too sick to get out of bed...
Anyway years and years later now I'm glad for the experience - I remember my first guitar having nylon strings which made it easy on my fingers, an electric guitar affords similar comfort for beginners. There's something to be said for taking lessons early on too - although a lot of instruction resources are available on line.

I also take pictures, I use a Canon 40D.

Orange makes a KILLER little 15 tube amp.

Orange does make a killer little amp. But I found that tube amps tend to amplify my mistakes. When I was learning it was really noticeable. Also, when buying tube amps its beneficial to know what playing style the player has. Tube amps tone tend to favor certain types of music. Fender makes a really neat little solid state g-dec 15 watt practice amp that has a thousand different settings. Amps like those are nice because they will concievably do any sound she wants. The only drawback to those types of amps can be distracting by playing with the setting rather than playing the guitar.

What Super Dave said ^^^^^^

A good setup is everything. The right, well setup, pawn shop cheapy will play better than a brand new mexican strat. And having an experienced player check out used guitars is the best way to find one in my opinion.
