Have any of you ever stuck a wood burning stove inside your existing fireplace? I imagine it’s worth the money if you use it for heating your home. I like my fireplace and I like having a fire but to be honest it’s almost more for show and not really that much of a heat output.

i have a soapstone freestanding woodstove in my house. i have installed inserts in fireplaces also but it has been long enough ago that i don't know costs anmore. i do recommend that you line your chimney with at least a double wall stovepipe though, your woodburner will run hotter and more efficient. i put a gas fired insert in my moms fireplace and it really works great and has a fan that forces the heat into the room. it will almost heat the whole house also. it is all sealed up so the draft comes from the outside and doesn't steal warm air from the house.

Last Pellets I bought was $175 a ton, 50 - 40lbs bags. That was a lot of years ago. But we sure liked it. We had a insert Pellet in a home we built, it was thermostat controlled. It worked awesome!

I love wood too! A insert if your flue is in great shape. If the flue is in bad shape, a liner can be installed, or Pellet Stove Vent Pipe can be put in it.

does anyone have an idea on cost to install?
The cost will vary based on the condition of your stove pipe/chimney. I’d suggest getting someone to clean and inspect your chimney. They should be able to give you some advice on what needs to be done to install a stove insert. When you get your insert, cleaning the chimney on a regular basis is highly recommended so it would be a good idea to find a trustworthy chimney cleaner now.
