Not trying to thread-jack, but here's a little shameless self-promotion...you won't find a better .308 starter setup for $650 than this. Bring your favorite scope and I'll meet you at your range so you can try it out.

Buy that, take it down to Dustin Gaunder for threading, and add your scope!

This has some nice specs for the money:

Where? On the page that I listed?

The B&C A2 Tactical Medalist fits either version of the Savage short action rifles, centerfeed or staggerfeed. Looks like they have both in stock, in multiple colors. I believe that's the only B&C Medalist series stock that fits the Savage rifles; the Medalist series are the ones with the full length aluminum bedding block. As far as the high end stocks, they can be had to fit pretty much anything - the Manners, and McMillan... etc. There are many laminated wood stocks to fit the Savage rifles, but they are far heavier. The choate tactical is in the same boat, it "works," but it's massively heavy.

You got a $500 rifle, $100 scope base and $200 bedded stock ... why is this thread still going ....

P.S. Well, crap, I shouldn't have clicked on that link either.

There's not a ".338 Winchester," unless you're referring to the .338 Win Mag. If so, there's quite a bit of difference. There is however a .338 Federal that is the .308 Winchester necked up to use the .338 bullets. Similar to the 7mm-08 and .243 Win, that are the .308 Win necked down for smaller bullets.
