My wife's first EDC was a cute little pink 32auto. That was the appeal to her, the cuteness. Ever since putting the KelTech P-11 9mm in her hand, the 9mm became her EDC and the cute little pink 32 is one of her BUGs.
I would rather my wife carry a 22 that she will shoot and can control, and feel confident with it, than a 380 or 9mm that she may or may not hit the target consistently, and follow up shots be all over the place. Being shot with anything is a great deterrent, and pretty sure most people, when they are shot, know the caliber of the bullet by being hit by it.
Glock 27 makes a wonderful women's carry gun.
If she is comfortable carrying a 22 and will carry it, buy it. Once she shoots for a while, she may want to change. For all the hype about not carrying a 22, I don't hear anyone willing to be shot by one. Usually a 22 will have a fairly high capacity, get her a CT grip for it, tell her to aim the dot and empty the mag, period. A 380 is pretty snappy in a small frame. For new shooters, it can be intimidating.
Go to 2A and rent some guns. I bought my wife a G19, and while she shoots it well, will not carry it because of the size. We went through a 642, P22, PM9, CW9, and finally she decided on a K9, and carries it, and is comfortable with it. Let her pick, and be willing to spend the money without saying a word. The team at 2A will help her out with the best options. Don't sweat the price, if you have it spend it, her life is worth it.
