It works really well......as good a Hoppe's.
Get a can of Kroil oil. Its a hydrocarbon that can penetrate .ooo,ooo,1 of an inch.
Great stuff for guns and whever you need "real"
penetrating oil.
WD-40 is great for getting moisture off of things,(what its designed for) but will gum up a gun at cold temps.
Kroil will remain fluid at sub zero temps.
I've used Kroil at -10F

I didnt know Hoppes was for cleaning firearms , I buy it for the smell . But really can you maybe do your cleaning in a back room or something with a window cracked . If it doesnt have some type of odor it probably is not going to clean like you want .

Non chlorinated brake cleaner gets grunge off so quickly that it's worth walking outside to use. Beyond that, CLP (in civilian quantities) doesn't smell too bad, and even my favorite liquid lube- 20-50W Mobil 1 (I tip the empty jugs over and drain into a clean container then transfer to oil bottles) does a fairly good job of cleaning surfaces and doesn't smell much at all.
