My 1st Lt.uncle I am named after survived DDay but was caught in the German mortar barrages in southern Belgium counter offensive, wounded, but managed to get his unit to safety. He died from infection in Normandy field hospital awaiting evac to England. His grave is in the same cemetery Private Ryan was filmed in.
Sadly, it seems that many are doing their best to remove this, and many other important dates, from our collective awareness.

My understanding is the man in this picture that is being helped ashore is my Uncle Silas. He almost drowned but was rescued by a couple of his squad mates.
I never had the chance to meet him, but was able to meet his wife, my Great Aunt Mary.
