Was wondering if some has something to publish here or know where to get an idea on the cleanliness of the different powders used for reloading. I know by some of my guns that some powders sure leave a lot of residue. Also burn rates and how does this effect residue.

Open for discussion?

Here’s a chart for “burn rates”…. http://www.hodgdon.com/burn-rate.html
Don’t think you'll ever seen one for clean vs. dirty powders - too many variables… might make more sense to ask for suggestions on a particular load… Overall I really like Vihtavuori flavors – sure they cost more but the accuracy is some of the best I’ve ever seen for me and my uses… for example – in 45 acp my race guns are tight and finicky… I shot many years always compromising with cleaner/accurate/recoil/PF issues and powders: Bullseye/Unique/231 – accurate but dirty… WST/Titegroup/700x/Clays/vv310 – cleaner but accuracy and PF suffered… vv320 is my personal favorite for my needs anyway – clean, soft shooting and extremely accurate… hope this helps

When burned all powders are dirty, some worse then others, most of the time low pressure loads are the problem Bullseye/Unique/231
along with a few others are the worst but even these will clean up a lot if loaded towards the top of there pressure curve for any
given load.

700X & 800X are the dirtiest I've ran into.
Pretty much regardless of load or gun.
But I really don't worry about it much.
I'm going to clean them anyways after shooting them.

Old info on shotgun shells--Red Dot=very clean, Green Dot=pretty clean, Blue Dot=dirty

That's experience, haven't really investigated any other powders to that extent re clean burning. I use a variety of rifle powders and haven't noticed any of them being particularly dirty.

the higher the pressure, the longer, the cleaner the burn will be.

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^

One fellow will complain bitterly that HP38 is super dirty, and another will say "not so bad."
Unique earned its nickname "flaming dirt" from light to moderate loads, while high pressure loads burn much more cleanly.
When it comes to efficiency and complete combustion, high pressure is your friend.

I started using Winchester Auto Comp a few moths back - it was all I could find - now its my go to powder....try it

I have been using this for Subsonic 9mm loads, 3.8grs with a 147gr bullet. Seems to be in the middle of the road. Did leave a lot of residue in the lower. Any other suggestions for this combo load?
