I really love the hybrid cars.
The part I love the most is that they are coal burning engines.
Think about it......their carbon footprint is huge, with the iron that must be mined, the hydrocarbons that have to be drilled for the plastics, and for the "green batteries" that also require mining, and you have a carbon footprint that is unacceptable.
The batteries have to be replaced on a regular basis, every few years.
Battery technology is still infantile.
Oh yeah, the statment that they are coal powered engines, is because coal powered power plants produce a huge part of the electric power we use and don't think about until the monthly bill comes around.
You are charging these "green cars with coal"

I can't wait to jump on the "green" bandwagon to support the leftist, elite, commie, enviromental band wagon that will take away our right to chose.

Where in the hell does anybody think our quality of living comes from? It comes from cheap utilities, an open market, and the right to choose.

We can choose to go to whatever bank has the lowest interest, or the utility that has the lowest price.
What would you do?

Finally, someone with common sense and useful knowledge. Hybrid cars a joke. Just like ethanol from corn. Hybrid cars and wind mills do more damage to the environment than they will ever return.

I can get near 40 mpg in my 2005 saturn ion with a stick and thats a combination of city and highway driving. Straight highway driving I have been able to get it up to 45 mpg. They have reasonably decent backseat room as well.

You will be throwing away money hand over fist if you purchase a hybrid and they aren't much cleaner, the pollution is another degree removed from you so you feel less guilty about it :)

Dustin, I guess when I said like maniacs what I meant is 80-85 mph cruising with a few jaunts up to a gps verified 116 mph. That's as maniacal as the car gets.

It's not really gutless though, it's just an around town commuter car, which is really the hybrid's element.

I maintain I like it though, slick little grocery getter.

I also maintain I want a cool little diesel sedan, too bad we can't get a lot of the neat ones over here.

Have you considered CNG? That is the future for this part of the country and Oklahoma is leading the way. With the State mandates in place right now there will be a CNG fueling station every 100 miles on the interstate system by 2012 and you can get a refueling system installed at your house for even cheaper fuel .Plus some CNG vehicles are dual fuel and can still run on gas. There is a dealer in the Tulsa area that sells surplus govt CNG vehicles and you still get the tax credit buying a gov surplus CNG car

A coworker looked at CNG vehicles, the problem he found was finding filling stations to use it as anything other than an around town grocery getter.

Traxxis this is my opinion only. But hybrids are about the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Feel better now...

So you are needing a fuel efficient car for long trips. The hybrid ain't it. On the interstate at speed you aren't using the batteries at all just the engine, so what the difference? Why spend extra coin on it? I'd get a regular Escape or you might try to dig up one of those small Jeep SUV's that competed with the Escape. I forgot the model name. They made them in diesel! If you can find one. Also the VW TDI's aren't that bad to work on and don't think anything about the oil requirements. I can hook you up with all you want at a normal price.

As for me I'd just about kill for a half ton 4X4 with a 4.0 to 4.5L turbo diesel. The ultimate would be this converted to CNG! As it is I'll end up with a 3/4 diesel. And down the road convert it to CNG.

I guess I should re-clarify... I am interested in the Fusion, Escape and the Cruze.

Not the least bit interested in a Civic.

The CNG is nice, but the size of the tanks are the biggest draw back. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a dual fuel CNG and what, propane? Also, I know that any I have ever driven (which was a while back) were very sensitive to the climate... have they taken care of that?

I really couldn't care less about the environmental issues, I just think it's a neat technology. As for the long trips, it's more of an issue of comfort rather than mileage, most of the Wife's traveling is town anyhow.

And I completely agree with the half ton TDI... my dream truck would be a four door Ranger with a Cummins 4bt. :)

What you need to look into is a Civic. :thumbup3:
