Byron's Liquor Warehouse has Ole Smokey and Midnight Moon. Bought some there on Wednesday.

Didn't initially like the taste, but after about 1/4 of the jar, it kinda grew on me and I started enjoying it. Make sure you shake it up real good before your first taste.

I tried some real stuff when I was a teen but it was pretty bad. The term "stump water" is pretty accurate since it tasted like really tannic water you'd find in a hollow stump top. If I had access to more real stuff that was any good I'd like to try it again. In the meantime I did some research online and talked to several people from Tennessee who have access to the real stuff said the closest you can buy legally is Ole Smoky, Midnight Moon or the Popcorn Sutton stuff that you can't buy outside Tennessee (hey that's what the local liquor store AND the distillery that sells it said). So I checked my local mega-booze mart "Grand Cru" (weird name, BIG store) and the only Ole Smoky they had was cherry, since I don't like cherries that one was out. I ended up buying a jar of 70 proof Apple Pie Midnight Moon and a jar of 100 proof strawberry Midnight Moon. I haven't cracked the seal on either since I'm not much of a drinker but maybe next we'll take a sip and I'll tell you how bad it was lol.

The storebought stuff is dumbed down quite a bit. If you're gonna go that route may as well just make your own dumbed down apple pie.

Here's my recipe for it:

1 gallon No sugar added Apple Juice
1 gallon No sugar added Apple Cider (can use real unfiltered cider here as well if you can find it)
2.5 cups of light brown sugar
1.5 cups cane sugar
10 cinnamon sticks
3 Tablespoons of Vanilla Extract
3 dashes of nutmeg

1.25L of Everclear 190

Boil everything except for the Everclear together until it hits a rolling boil. Stir frequently.
Let cool below 140*F
Add alcohol and stir
Put in Mason Jar while still warm with a cinnamon stick in each jar
Store in dark for 1-2 weeks to allow drink to smooth out

This will make approximately 10 quarts of the stuff so give some to friends and family.

With the cinnamon stick in the jar, will this last years in a mason jar like normal alcohol?

Has anyone had store bought and real moonshine as well?

I had the "pleasure" of trying Ole Smoky store bought and real honest to goodness Tennessee hill moonshine last year at deer camp. Had a fella with us in deer camp who grew up helping his grandfather back in the day in Eastern Oklahoma with real stuff. I thought the real stuff seemed to be a bit smoother, (if you can call 150 + proof smooth). Old Smokey was not as high in the proof arena but seemed a bit harsher..

The fella in camp(w/ "experience") tried 'em both and told us that the real stuff to him was much better. Either one of the types was way too much "firepower" for this old fat boy to drink straight. I was mixing it up with orange juice and here to tell you slept VERY well that night. Next morning getting up to go the woods was a little rougher than normal..
