Ive got the bird separated in a 3x3 pen in the house. The cut isnt deep but it made a 2 inch gash along the thoracic air sac. I cleaned the wound and applied Vetericyn under gauze pad. I wrapped a bandage around its waist to keep it in place. I think it might need stitches to close the cavity so it doesn't get infected.

Yeah definitely don’t do that. This method has been proven time and time again to be unsafe.

Keep an eye on it, stitches often make things worse by preventing drainage and closing infection inside the wound. Also debridment of the wound has to happen before closure to remove dead tissue. Is the wound near the vent?

No the cut is right in front of it's leg and under the wing. If i can't close it I imagine she'll get a respiratory infection. Here's a pic but it's gory. The first pic is after rinsing and neosporin for 2 days.

Too late to close it. I'm not a vet but I think she will be ok

You’d be surprised what chickens can heal from. I’ve had roosters fight and some have been damaged very badly before. Just washed wounds and isolated him. The SOB healed up and re-feathered pretty quickly.

But in all reality unless there is something special about the bird or it’s breed or whatever, just make soup

I had one bird die last week because I was too dumb to realize they needed a fan in the coop. This one's only 6 months old and its my fault for not trimming the roosters spurs. Fortunately I think the wound is closing up. I just need to see what the vet has for infections.

You could run an oral antibiotic that mixes with water for goats or sheep. Tetracycline use to be the go to but I dont know if they still sell it.

We just started getting eggs from our chickens a few days ago. They're just shy of 17 weeks. There's no way to justify the cost of the eggs from your own chickens. They're outrageously expensive. But it's not really about the cost for us. It's about having our own source of food without relying on anyone else. It's about how the fresh eggs are so much better tasting and better nutritionally than store-bought eggs. It's about the satisfaction of doing for yourself. Not only that, but chickens are just fun to have around. Several of ours are tame enough to let me pet them and hold them. I have one that runs to me like a puppy dog every time I come outside. She follows me around like my shadow and just chats away.

I'm not nearly as fond of the guineas. We started with 12 and we're down to 7. 1 just died, 1 was killed by a snake (when it was just a few weeks old), 2 disappeared and never came home...don't remember what happened to number 5.

One of the guineas was attacked by 1 or more of the others. She had some pretty good wounds on the side of her breast area and on her back. I didn't think she'd make it. We separated her from the other guineas and she healed up just fine, apparently. She's back to roaming with the others and everyone seems to be getting along.
