I think there are still questions on if this drone is simply a surveillance drone or not. I lean toward surveillance and the media is using the wording it is to drum up fears. However, when you hear the police chief in the area claiming that this man is a home grown terrorist and his acts are those of terrorism, they are basically declaring him a terrorist at war with our country and affording him no due process. This one is going to be very interesting to watch and see how it ends.

It just got real people.

Where in the hell is RedDog when we need him!

I can see how a drone would be a helpful tool for a man hunt, but if a missle is shot out of that drone, its time for a revolution!!!!

Not sure it is a non-story just yet. Yes, drones are used routinely along the border for surveillance. If this was a non-issue, why is it a media story? Labeling him as a terrorist (which is what the drone mess is about, killing terrorists before they act) and calling him the first human target when surveillance drones are used all the time against humans makes one stop and wonder. Yes, it very likely may be a non-issue. I just want to see how this one turns out.

Transparency isn't a good thing in all aspects of government... Especially for the next significant tool of war... Secrecy has worked well so far for back to back world war champs...

The claims of those who are suggesting the use of these drones are used for good purposes are no more credible than those who are suggesting nefarious purposes. Either way, it's speculation.

The question is, if it's purpose is for research for the betterment of society, why not let it be known? If there's nothing to hide, why hide it?

Who's hiding anything? There's a sh*t-ton of research that happens at every major research university that never gets reported; it goes with the territory. If you want to know why OU (or, more likely, someone at OU) has requested permission to fly drones, call up OU's Public Affairs office and ask them.

Personally, I'd guess that it has something to do with this: Four Reasons Oklahoma Could be the Detroit of Drone Development

Edit: I'm not sure the article makes it clear, but James Grimsley is OU's Assistant Vice President for Research and Director of the Center for Applied Research & Development.

If the information is that readily available and they are that forthcoming, I just have to ask why it takes a freedom of information act request and filing a lawsuit to get what little information there is about their program?

Newly Released Drone Records Reveal Extensive Military Flights in US

These records, received as a result of EFF’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), come from state and local law enforcement agencies, universities and-for the first time-three branches of the U.S. military: the Air Force, Marine Corps, and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).
