Nope... I worked with some of the poorest of the poor, none of whom took it as a compliment (especially from a non-cajun). To them, it was an insult directed at the white and black couples that had children which had both white and black genes... hence "coon".
BTW: As lawyers and IT guys... y'all are probably the most "uppity" people I spend any time with.
Needed to call Shelby anyways, so I asked him about it.
He said the reason it's looked at the way I described and considered an insult is because of the infestation of KKK in that area. He said that racism is really bad in that area.
He did say that normally, at least in other areas of the state, blue collar workers do normally call themselves coons but that the white collar workers usually consider it an insult.
Hmm... learn something new everyday.
