Those will work fine on soft precious metals. If you have one of the fancy stainless steel or tungsten rings they won't work at all. The metal of the ring is too hard.

I've got a tungsten ring, and one of SS, and don't wear either of them. I've been a mechanic of some sort most of my life, so don't routinely wear a ring anyway.

It seems like the string or floss trick is most successful. I wonder if you kept it wrapped for 10 or 20 minutes, if the compression from the wrap might shrink the finger a bit.

If you resort to cutting, slower is better, and you could run you finger in a stream of water while cutting.
stream of water....to knock down the blood splatter????
