The only rifle bigger than .30 that I own is a 8mm Mauser, but if I had to choose one large/magnum caliber do hunt any game and shoot long range it would be a .338 Lapua Mag. I do have a Marlin guide gun in .45-70 on my dream list though.

375 H&H. I would not consider it a long range round though. My 45-70 is a lot of fun also. I need to shoot both of those more. I would trust the 45-70 out to longer distances though.

I've been partial to the 6.5x55 ever since I shot my first Swedish Mauser. Right behind is 7x57, .30-06 and 7.5x55. There are many similar cartridges, but I can speak to these from experience.

Centerfire spitzer bullet is my 7X57 Ruger #1, and my Mini-30 in 7.62X39.

Classic Stainless Winchester Mod. 70 in 300 Weatherby for most things, including long range stuff. Big stuff, Classic Stainless 70 in 358 Norma or 416 Remington. I kind of have a thing for classic stainless Winchesters.

Back during the 90's, I worked with some larger stuff, mostly .338-378 Weatherby Mag (custom builds, without the excessive Weatherby freebore) and it was (still is) an excellent cartridge for distance work, as good as (maybe better than) the .338Lap.

Now mostly use a pair of 300WinMags with 230 grain Berger hybrids, they are capable of 1500m work.

Real long range is not in my list of needs anymore, so I prefer my newer Mdl. 70 375 H&H as my heavy for fun. It's nothing like the true big bores, but about all I'd ever need on this continent. I don't have one anymore, but the Winchester 86, or Marlin 95 in 45-70, loaded heavy with Speer's 400 gr soft point, is fun for about 4 rounds. Then it's just not fun for me.
