Fresh Turkey for Thanksgiving??

Hey All,

Here goes a really silly question......but look who its coming from....right?

Where do you all get "fresh" turkeys for Thanksgiving?? My father-in-law has always bought and cooked this bird and he has a stern rule for "fresh" turkeys???

He and my Mother-in-law are on vacation in Paris, France.....so that leaves out the..."just ask him".

Do I find a grocery store, go to the meat section and order one?? How far in advance?? What store?????

My wife and I have always bought one already cooked, smoked, deep fried...what ever. If not, we went with the frozen ones.

Now that we're going to brine it and he'll cook it we need to double make sure its fresh.

Help ol' Cohiba out on this goofy ordeal!!!!!:drink:

A fresh turkey can still be frozen. I believe the term "fresh" means that they haven't injected a sodium solution into it. That's why you only brine fresh birds. If you brine one that's already been injected with the sodium solution, you better know EXACTLY what you are doing, because they can taste like a salt block otherwise. It can be done, but you need to drop the salt level in the brine solution and/or adjust the time in the brine.

Read the fine print on the labels, it will state whether or not it has been injected.
