Might be. It's a little before my time but I am fairly certain that Armalite and/or Colt made some rifles with no forward assist for the USN very early on and these were not a typical flatside unit either. It's difficult to tell at that resolution but from here that patina looks legitimate.

None of the early Armalites or Colts were equipped with forward assist, nor cleaning kits as they were assumed to be cleaning free. Dirty ammo causing jams caused the advent of the forward assist as well as cleaner ammo and cleaning kits issued.
