Might prove to be more of a challenge for OKC schools with the year round schedule. But they still have quite a bit of time off, it's just scattered.

240 hours is excessive. Teachers are not confined to working the school day hours. Many of us coach and have other responsibilities such as family and taking classes towards a masters degree. The state trusts me to carry a pistol with 8 hours of training. I don't see how 40-80 hours of training with twice yearly 6-8 hour qualifiers and refreshers would not be adequate. Teachers do not need all the training of a reserve officer, as we will not be making arrests, writing reports, handcuffing, etc... We simply need firearm specific training.

I have spoken to the author concerning the training. Cleet requires training in patrol, report writing, etc. which isn't needed. Expect to see some amendments prior to vote.

FYI.....HB 1062 Pass House Committee

TEXT:
School Firearm Bill Passes House Committee
The House Public Safety Committee this week passed HB 1062 by a vote of 8-3. The bill, by Rep. Mark McCullough (R, Tulsa), would allow local school boards to develop policies for teachers and administrators to attend a 240 hour CLEET (Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training) certification, approved by a sponsoring law enforcement agency. Once approved and certified, those personnel would be designated reserve officers of the sponsoring agency and allowed to carry concealed firearms at school locations. There was extensive questioning of the legislation, especially concerning liability of teachers and the management of training costs.

The bill will now be eligible for discussion before the full House of Representatives. For more information on the legislation, committee discussion or votes, please call or email Chancen Flick in the LPO center at 800.522.8091, 405.528.7785 or [email protected].

Just emailed Mr.Flick with my concerns about the requirement of being a reserve officer. That requirement is overkill, silly, and too many teachers will not have the time or money to complete it.

What does this training usually cost?
Is it 30 straight days or broken up over months?

Most classes are not weekend inclusive, so you are looking at 6 40 hour weeks. Many teachers have summer jobs or stay home with kids in the summer. Not sure on class cost, but the cost of day care ($150-200 a week) would have to be factored in as well for many teachers. Not only is it a time issue, but a training issue. It is pointless to spend time training teachers in skills not needed for carrying a pistol to protect kids. The duties of a teacher and the duties of an officer are vastly different and there is no need for the training to be the same.
