The insuring agreement of most auto policies read something like this: "The insurance company will pay for damages legally owed by the insured for bodily injury (or property damages) arising out of the USE of a covered auto."
That's pretty broad.

After looking into this apparently crazy result, it appears that 1) Geico screwed up by declining to defend their insured in front of the arbitrator when they had the chance 2) the arbitrator, who may or may not also be a judge but probably isn't, issued a wild, legally unprecedented but nonetheless contractually binding decision, and 3) the State Court judges faithfully applied the law to the facts they were given.
That doesn't mean this is over. Geico still has an action pending in Federal Court to determine whether the policy applies to this scenario at all. For anyone sufficiently interested, Steve Letho does a much more in-depth analysis of the legal issues at play. Look up "Lethos Law" on YouTube.
