How long is the wait time?

I think they will only let you renew online now if I'm not mistaken. I tried to renew before mine expired and the site said I had to wait until it expired to renew. So after it expired I went back and tried to renew but then they told me since it was expired I'd have to get fingerprinted and get a new background check also. I wrote them and told them that they were the ones who told me to let it expire. So they wrote back and said since it wasn't expired very long they would go ahead and renew it. It took I'd guess 3 or 4 weeks til I got it in the mail. In other words it's a big fat cluster foxtrot over there and they make the rules up as they go along. If you turned in your request and haven't heard back in 2 months I'd write them. I got the impression they never get in a hurry unless you build a fire under them.

And when I applied for my original SDA permit at the CCS in El Reno it only took a few weeks if I recall. It seems a 'renewal' would be a snap once they have your money.

No. This is a result of a new law that took effect on 7/1/24 and was passed by the legislature. It affects those whose renewal application would be outside of the period or renewal. Oklahoma statute 21-1290.5 is the one to look at.

"New SDA Renewal Requirements

Effective 07/01/2024, applicants wishing to renew an SDA Handgun License after the renewal time frame allowed per Title 21 OS 1290.5, are required to submit an application through the Initial Application process. This process requires completing an Oklahoma Self-Defense Act Training class and processing your completed Self-Defense Act application through the County Sheriff’s Office of the county in which you physically reside, including new fingerprint cards. **The SDA Unit can no longer process *Expired Renewals* per state statute.**

Effective 11/01/2024, per SB 1291, applicants shall have 30-days from the expiration of the license to comply with the renewal requirements in Title 21 OS 1290.5. "
