All I ever desired in life was to be comfortable in life and the same in retirement.
The amount of money is not relevant as ones definition of what is comfortable for them may be different from others.
As long as one is happy in their life it doesn’t matter how much money you possess.
If one decides to be an over achiever with putting on fronts like a home you can barely afford to appear “rich”, your not going to be comfortable in your lifestyle because you can’t enjoy the other fruits of life like having a fluid cash flow for travel, helping kids in an emergency, covering your own emergencies, and so on.
There are a lot of millionaires out there that are financially poor.

I've never met Dennis but I've read many of his posts and have had some PMs going back and forth and if i can have nearly as much as this man has and do the things he does in retirement i will be perfectly content with how my life turned out. While I don't see anything but a very small glimps of his life through the OSA lens i know I'd be happy to have is lifestyle when i retire. I'm a huge beliver in passing my wealth on to the next generation, my son, and that is what i intend to do.

When we had our business and things were going great. Grossing close to a million a year I bought a pair of black boxers with green dollar signs all over them. Told the wife when we made our first million I was going to wear them.

Bunch of a$$holes were ripping off Medicare for equipment so they changed the rules hurting everybody especially the small honest dealer, then the economy took a downturn and my health took a nose dive. We had to dip into our reserves just to pay our employees. Things kept getting worse until we had to file bankruptcy and close the business.

I still have those boxers, never worn as a reminder to never count your chickens before they hatch.
At least they didn't take the boxers in the bankruptcy.

I've made over a million dollars in my lifetime, but...

I remember when I was teaching in North Carolina one time I had a surgeon in my class, he complained that he was 40 years old before his net worth reached zero.

I'll be lucky to reach a net worth of zero by the time I'm 50. If I keep pushing my retirement and the stock market doesn't crash again, I might get there. Right now, I'm well below zero in net worth.

But I no longer work ER (miserable), no longer commute 3h a day (also miserable) and have plenty of time at home with my wife and son who love me much MUCH more than I deserve. So as long as we can pay the bills and once in a while take a vacation, I'll count myself lucky, upside-down net worth or no. <sigh>

<edit> Oh, and it ain't from an extravagant, flashy lifestyle... my home is a plain jane 40+ y/o 2100 sq ft ranch, and all our vehicles are paid off and 12, 15 and 19 years old.

55 and debt free in a brand new home. Our cars have a combined age of 32 years and almost 400k miles. I’ve tried to tell people over the years this one thing. If you earn an average living and don’t have money to burn, DONT buy new flashy cars. Just imagine what a couple can do with an extra 1k a month.
