Comparing Walmart workers with police, fire, and hospital workers is apples and oranges, give me a break, nobody is going to die if they don't get to go shopping for one day, although some may disagree, but that's a personal issue they need to deal with. If I had to work because somebody might die, I would do it with pride, if I had to work because somebody can't wait another day to shop, I'd have a problem with it because they are taking a day away from me that I don't get to see family any other time of the year. Do I agree with the striking, no, because I don't agree with the unions. Do I agree with Walmart for opening their stores, no, but their just more money for their stockholders. I hold the people who go shopping responsible.

Didn't Walmart give their employees Thanksgiving and Christmas off in recent years?

Christmas day shifts, yes. Christmas night shifts, no.

In fact, when I worked there from 2005-2007, Black Friday was non-optional, and Thanksgiving was like any other holiday.

If they don't want to work Thanksgiving, they're free to find a job where they have Thanksgiving off.

While I am technically going to be at a family function, I'll still be on pagerduty. I'm working late tonight and late tomorrow night to make up for the lost time from Thanksgiving, but that doesn't mean that I won't get a sudden alert that something has to be fixed.

I'm not sure why anyone is bitching anyway. It isn't anything new. Walmart only closes for 16 hours a year at christmas.
Admittedly, I didn't read the whole post and this may have been covered..... but it seems stupid for these people (employees? media? both?) to be so bitchy.
They should be glad they have a steady paycheck (for now).

 I can not stand any more of the whining about Wal Mart employees working on Thanksgiving. The news acts like they are the only people to ever have to work on Thanksgiving. One story even asked "What does a holiday mean if a certain segment of society is de facto excluded from celebrating it?". Get over it already. In the past 20yrs I have worked one of those two days almost as often as I have had them off.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programing from Uncle JB's world o' camps

Look man.......
Just because *you* had to work on the holidays doesn't make it right.

:rotflmao:

Meh....it's still a sh!++y thing to make people do, IMO.

I think it bothered me the most when I was younger and held a day job in the food service industry.....and we would always be freakin' balls-to-the-wall SLAMMED!
:nono2:

I mean, who freakin' goes out to eat on Easter or Thanksgiving!?
I could just never wrap my head around that.
Those are times you are supposed to share with your family/friends......the ones you love......eating a home cooked meal or having a picnic.
Definitely not for camping out all day in a resturant, eating non-traditional meals, pissing & moaning and nitpicking the sh!+ out of the staff.
:teach:

Anyway, that's what *I* think......

Nice thought, but those of us that work in the military, power plants, refinery's, fire departments, LEO's, and a host of others would like to be there but know we have to be there so all that don't can have a nice holiday.

Nice thought...and those services are definitely most appreciated by me and mine...but remember you're not just "there so people can have a nice holiday".
You're also there so some knotheads can f-up everyone else's holiday by going out to eat.
I mean there's wrong and right, and that just ain't right.

Hell, that can happen any day of the week.
I grew up with a dad that worked in a power plant, and was in the military, finally residing in a power plant myself.
We did Christmas/thanksgiving, etc, on the days dad/I was off.
It wasn't a really big deal as far as my childhood/my kids went. Its just what we had to do.

Happy Thanks Giving!

Roger that.

I grew up with a huge family (on both sides) and we had Sunday dinner almost every week.
Then during the holidays ALL of the family members would travel from around the country to be together.
It's one of the reasons the holiday season is so damn depressing to me....a lot of them have passed away and come this time of year I realy miss being able to get together with my folks...ya' know?

If people at walmart have to go to work on Thanksgiving, doesn't that deminish the sacrifice that people in vital jobs make by going to work on Thanksgiving?
I've given your post some thought.
Do we shut down the economy for a holiday or do we respect it, and everybody not in vital jobs are required to be off.

My company pays pretty good money for working on the holidays.
Some don't.
Some pay wages.
I guess it depends on if you need the money or a day off.
