There have always been critical services that have had to work on holidays. Holiday shopping is not critical to anyone but the company. That is the issue.

I am doing a 24 hour ems shift for Thanksgiving. For me the holiday season buzz has got gotten stupid. I read somewhere that the black friday specials, mainly electronics are made from sub-par parts. And that they don't last. I don't know. No way I will get up and stand in line. When I can get sleep I take it. Sometimes cheap is expensive. Happy Happy to yous guys and gals!

your 100% correct. Lots of people have jobs that are critical, retail sales aint one of them.

Walmarts open for 2 reasons only; its more convenient than flying to China and GREED.

I have been on call 24/7 for the last 20 some odd years. I have worked all of the Holidays, in the middle of the night, cold or hot, rain or snow. None of it was scheduled or is scheduled. Last year during deer gun season, opening day I got 30 or so calls on the phone because of a stupid water leak no one could shut off.

I've been thinking, working at Wally World would be like having a break. At least you know when you have to go to work and can schedule the rest of your life around it.

When I was in the Navy, if we were at sea, we were working on any holiday. When I worked for a TV station, we still broadcasted on holidays (but we worked reduced hours.) When I worked as a CSR, if we were scheduled on a holiday and didn't get approved for a day off, we worked it.

However, when I worked at a cable local origination station in New Jersey, the only thing we did on Thanksgiving was videotape one of the many high school football games in the area, which meant overtime on top of the holiday pay-except for one year. We kept the remote production truck in a garage bay in the cable company office (which used to be a Lincoln-Mercury dealership). When we arrived that one Thanksgiving, we found the building was on reduced power due to a transformer blowing. We we're able to open the garage door so we couldn't get the truck out. We waited to see if the electric company was going to restore power in time for us to get the truck out and get to the high school to set up. When they didn't, we called it a day and went home. The reason for the partial blackout? A squirrel electrocuted itself on a transformer!
