Yeah I learned the same lesson awhile back. I had just got back from Iraq and met a girl who I just thought hung the moon. She was short on her rent so I gave her 350-450 something like that. After I went back from leave, she told me to pound sand and I haven't heard from her since. I haven't loaned anyone more than a dollar for a soda since.

I'm not loaning anyone else money, I am done. If they are going to lose their car or get their phone shut off........tough *****. $400 could buy a nice gun or quite a bit of ammo.

That is why you get collateral for the loans. It doesn't weed out all of the deadbeats, but if you are smart about what you take as collateral being
a: Something you want or can easily sell
b: Worth more than the loan amount

Then you can usually come out ahead.

You guys aren't the only ones who have learned that lesson the hard way. Deadbeats always have a way of finding soft-hearted people, regardless of gender.

The ONLY people I have EVER loaned anything to and gotten it back was here on OKShooters.

Like others have said, though, if you don't really want to "lose it" don't loan it.

AK, you can probably take her to small claims court but you are gonna be throwing good money after bad ... filing fees, time off work, etc. And even if you get judgment against her I will bet you a dollar you have to garnish her paycheck to get relief. More time and money ... and if she is like most she will just quit that job and find another.

Too much trouble in my book, but YMMV ... just depends on how bad you want to make a statement.

You know my tightwad brother once said something that made sense to me.

He said he only loaned stuff to people he'd already seen borrow and return to someone else.
Kind of like the banks, no credit history means no loan.

Me I'm a sucker........

I don't know about Oklahoma, but in Kansas that what's called a "civil issue", which means that you would have to go through small claims court. Small claims court is up to, but not over, $1000 with no lawyers or anything like that. Basically you file with the county and they set up a court date for you and her. A judge then determines who wins. You pay up front and if she loses, then she pays the costs plus the damages or whatever your claiming.

Close.

Once you go to court, and if the judge rules in your favor, you get a judgment in your favor, that you are owed this money. Then "good luck" actually getting the money out of them.
