I'm taking a young lady to H&H to look at handguns his weekend,,,
I doubt she will buy her gun on this trip,,,
Gun fondling is our goal this time.

She asked some friends what would be a good gun for her,,,
Naturally they all had suggestions for her,,,
Usually it was because they had one.

So I'm going to take a different tack with helping her,,,
Even though I have a few guns in mind,,,
I won't recommend any of them.

I have a few criteria for to pay attention to.

We are going to have her hold as many guns as she can,,,
As she holds them I/we will be looking for these three things:

• Can she operate the mag release without shifting her grip.
• Can she operate the slide release without shifting her grip.
• Can she operate the safety switch without shifting her grip.

My take on shooting is that if the gun doesn't fit your hand,,,
You may develop some proficiency with that gun,,,
But you will never become one with it.

I believe that a person who is one with their .22,,,
Is more dangerous that someone who is clumsy with their .45.

So after we make a list of possible guns based on those three criteria,,,
Then we start looking at the working features and action type.

I know that few people are going to agree completely with my method,,,
But it seems so obvious that a good hand to gun fit is essential.

For one thing if it doesn't fit well,,,
They probably won't practice with it very much,,,
And one thing we should be able to agree on is that practice is essential.

We shouldn't have any difficulty,,,
Discovering a nice selection to choose from,,,
She has small hands but single-stack 380's and 9's abound.

I would recommend having her check out the Walther PK380 (not to be confused with the PPK) while you are out looking. Very nice pistol for a lady to shoot, it took me a while to find one my wife enjoyed to shoot and fit her, and she could rack the slide without strain. I also agree with you on the hand fit, very important. Heck I even enjoy shooting it, and have consider using it for my EDC. It's been super reliable.

range acquaintance has one and I like it.

But again, I'm approaching this with no recommendation at all,,,
First we eliminate every gun that doesn't fit her hand,,,
Then we make a list of guns that do fit her hand.

Then and only then do we start looking at features and reputation.

Believe me though,,,
Even if a gun fits her perfectly,,,
I won't let her buy a known POS weapon.

XDS 9mm 3.3 or 4.0 inch are slim and no manual safety to fight with in a high stress sit.

I was only making a recommendation on having her check it out, not necessarily to recommend it as a purchase, just so she gets an opportunity to get her hands on it so she can have an opinion on it. Not a lot of people have actually seen, held, and/or shot one. They are a nice piece of weaponry.

You are absolutely correct,,,
And I intend to remedy that lapse.

It's just that we've only been shooting one time,,,
I haven't introduced her to revolvers yet.

I have several J-frame and K-frame revolvers,,,
So we will have a nice selection to try.
