Gas tanks behind the seat do not thrill me but not for a safety reason.
It is a space reason.
I could use the behind the seat space for goodies that I want to keep locked in the cab when I go somewhere.

Rear mounting a fuel tank is no big deal and you can keep the filler neck in the original place also.
I did just that with my 1947 dodge truck.

You will be hard pressed today to topple an old truck in the majority of crashes now. Most will be with much smaller cars.

I do not go around worrying what will happen in a crash.
I just drive and keep awareness at a high.

Agree with most here on mechanical restoration only. Keep it Grandpa's truck. You will not regret it. Very happy for you (and a little jealous). Most of us will never have such an opportunity.

Whats wrong with propane?

It is generally cheaper than gasoline, and stores for a long long time!

I understand it, if for the reason that you cant just go into any gas station and fill up!

Can you use propane AND gasoline?

If my wee knowledge is correct 1, less hp just like a generator, 2, allows seals to dry out as there's no lube in propane.3, you might also not like the secondary tank

it used to run both. After a few decades of strictly propane it kinda “forgot” so to speak on how to run on gas. Gotta pay taxes on the propane to drive it so as it sits right now I’d probably have a hefty fine if I got pulled over and didn’t have proof the taxes were paid on the propane.

I would grab an LMC truck catalog and go to town. Growing up we had a 68 Chevy ton and a half flatbed dually we hauled hay with. It had a 350 in it out of something else, possibly a Camaro.
