I'm looking for a Router slash security appliance that can fit my needs.

I am working on a 30 room hotel and small event center and need a router that offers firewall protection for the business office and can handle sesperate Guest access for wired and wireless access points spread out in the building. VPN is a plus, bandwidth control, and a Splash screen for the guest access is also a plus. Currently looking into watchdog and computer based solutions but and kinda overwhelmed at the moment at how little solutions there seem to be.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Can't remember all the details but I set up our network like you need several years ago. I used a second wireless router on a different IP address (Seem to remember something about different subnet) for public access to the internet. It is plugged into my network router and I had to configure the network router to pass the internet through to the other router. Because the two routers have different IP addresses you can't access the local network from the public router.

Hope this helps. If you get into it and get stuck I might be able to figure out how I did it.

Although I understand that the vendors tell you that you can do both public and private networking through the same device, I prefer to set them up separately. It's a little more costly but it allows for better physical security and better redundancy, in a pinch if something goes wrong.

The last place I worked we used a SonicWall appliance to do something similar for our wireless network. Our APs had multiple SSIDs, one for guests, and one for employees. The SSIDs connected to different VLANs which were eventually handled by the SonicWall.

Parts of that system have since been replaced by Meraki equipment, which I hear is working very well. AFAIK, the meraki stuff can do the bandwith control and splash screen.

I'm with BReeves and SoonerTactical but maybe we're old school... I say 2 different devices so you can have the physical separation. Put the wireless outside the firewall. That's how I do it.

I will throw my hat in with BReeves and SoonerTactical. The redundancy is worth it in case of failure. We have a SonicWall router at my office, and I would say that connectivity for wireless users is less than exceptional, and I have to reboot it three times a week. To qualify that, I have not called SonicWall about the issue - to busy, but I shouldn't have to. The two Netgear routers I am using work just fine.
