Your best bet with 3phase motors on single phase supply is to go with a VFD... plus it adds neat features like torque limiting, negates most of the inrush current, and gives you the ability to change speads electrically. Capacitor-based phase converters are just too unreliable.

Yep, just sat through an ABB VFD class yesterday.

I took a class in okmulgee that more or less was just VFDs (Baldor donated a ton of equipment) and never knew you could use one to run a 3 phase motor.

With them do you get full power or is it partial power like on a static converter? This is something I would really like to look into as my lathe at my dads is on a static converter right now. But i bet it would be a little spendy as it is either a 5 or 7.5 HP motor.
