My first thought was battery has a bad cell. If you know how to use a volt meter check the voltage when you try and crank it. If it drops off from 12+ to half that you got a bad battery.

Pretty much everything @swampratt said is on the money. Also its possible the new starter is binding up on the flywheel. Make sure your bolts are tight and its lined up good still.

Fuel pumps, carbs, starters, alternators, solenoids......all of those items whether for small engine or vehicles can be bought brand new and still be bad right out of the box or last just days or months. It's very common.

Mice?

Just kidding. Does the engine turn with a wrench? Do the blades turn? Put a charger on it or your truck like you're jumping a battery then try it. If the solenoid is hitting it''s the starter or the battery.

Stuck a charger on the battery and it was reading 12v.

I ended up sweating like a dog and mowing the front with the push mower and then messed around with the riding mower. I may just replace the solenoid too since I've got things torn apart.

I'll check all of the other things y'all recommended when I get a chance.

Thanks everyone!

The charger has a volt meter on it??
Did you try to crank it with the charger hooked up?
Or is it a new style charger that will go bad if you do that.

I still say get a dedicated volt meter and test it and test voltage while trying to crank it over.
If voltage does not drop when trying to crank it then you either do not have voltage going to the starter or solenoid or one or the other is bad or wiring again.
