Seems there are lots of ammendments to the original law saying no open carry.
As has been stated, recreational shooting is an exception.
Hunting with a handgun would be another?
I've open carried a hog leg on my hip and a rifle or shotgun in my hands for many years while being checked in the field by GW's. All loaded.
Not an eyebrow has been raised.
A guy that traps on me is a county deputy, seeing me with an open side arm during hunting season many times as well. He has never told me to conceal it.

Coyote and Hog season runs year around. Pistols are legal firearms.
I'm hunting anytime I'm at the farm.

As a side note, anyone on their farm/ranch can have a rifle loaded in the vehicle with them for varmint control. If you have to enter and travel on a state/county/city road, it must comply with those regulations.
