Got an Email from CMP today stating the HRA Service Grades are on backorder but they had a small lot of SA Service grades for the same price ready to ship if I wanted to change my order. I went ahead and told them I would take the SA. They said it should ship in the next 7 to 10 days as long as the shipping department wasnt back logged. Hope I didnt make a mistake.

I don't think you made a mistake and you may get a WWII receiver, if that means anything to you. I was hoping that they would have had a nice field grade shooter when I went down with your paperwork, but I saw nothing that gauged really well on the racks. I just received another service grade last week and it will make a great shooter, though I would rather have something with a little more wear on it. The one I got last week had a nice light gray finish on the receiver and internals, a 60's era SA barrel with 1/2 readings, and a new CMP stock. The rifle looks like it was shot very little after it was rebarreled and refinished. You should get something that is very serviceable.

There's now some more hope for guys who want a Field Grade SA/HRA or Service Grade SA/HRA. They're back on the website for sale. Both are new 'luck of the draw' categories at slightly higher prices. Still a steal. Here's the email:

M1 GARAND SERVICE GRADE - Effective immediately Service Grade M1 Garand rifles manufactured by Springfield Armory (RM1SAS) and Harrington & Richardson (RM1HRAS) will be combined into one item number - RM1SERVICE. Orders will be filled on a "luck of the draw" basis with the next rifle that becomes available in either manufacturer. One reason for the change is that we can no longer predict within a reasonable amount of time how many M1s of these manufacturers will grade out as service grade during our inspection and repair process. The other major reason for the change is that most of our customers are only concerned with the grade of the rifle and not the manufacturer. Customers may still indicate their preference on the order form and we will fill the request if possible at the time the order is processed for shipment. Orders already received will be honored as to manufacturer. We currently have open orders for over 1,800 RM1HRAS. Customers who have placed orders for RM1HRAS who are willing to accept an RM1SAS should email [email protected] at this time.

M1 GARAND FIELD GRADE - Effective immediately, Field Grade M1 Garand rifles manufactured by Springfield Armory (RM1SAF) and Harrington & Richardson (RM1HRAF) will be combined into one item number - RM1FIELD. Orders will be filled on a "luck of the draw" basis with the next rifle that becomes available in either manufacturer. M1 GARAND PRICE INCREASES - Effective 7 August, 2014 the price of the Springfield Armory and Harrington & Richardson Service Grade M1 is increased to $695. Orders currently on hand or received prior to 7 August will be charged the prices in effect prior to this increase. Visit
