What about the X-15? At 4,510 mph with a ceiling of 354,000 feet it is the fastest and highest-flying piloted aircraft in history.

Amazing aircraft, but it wasn't used for cold war recon.

Very cool to watch the U2 takeoff and landing. I watched them at Osan AB Korea in the mid 90s.
