the term "indian" was never intended to be offensive, it merely identified us as a people. However for the next 500 years Europeans attempted to commit genocide against us or destroy every part of our culture. When people, other than Indians, decided to take the next step and convince Indians they were not even an individual culture, but part of a larger America, it was one more step towards destroying our identity.
lastly, Indian would be either, depending on context. attempting to cause confusion is used for the same rest as above. However, "injun" is extremely offensive, the same using the "n" word towards a black, which several of the mods and owner of this forum believe is fine.

I've been called a wagon burner and also a cracker at the same time. ( I am white and Indian) None of them made me upset. I could care less what someone calls me. If I were black and you called me a ****** I wouldn't care either. But words don't bother me. Cause that's all they are. I don't understand why people let other people get them upset by calling them a name. What are we 12? And there is something else that does bother me. When a black person wants to be called an "African American". I didn't realize that black people born in America were Africans? Maybe I missed something. I have black friends and they hate that term. They say " I ain't from Africa". Would someone call a white person from Africa an African American? I guarantee they wouldn't. Like using the word black is derogatory. Give me a break. That would be like me getting upset that someone calls me white. Or brown.

Reminds me of an old episode of Murphy Brown.

Murphy Brown was taking questions from an audience, and said "I'll take a question from the Black man in the third row". He came unglued and said "I am not a Black man, I am an African American". She moved on to the next question and said "I take a question from the African American woman on the left". She came unglued and said with a Jamaican accent, "I am not an African American, I am Jamaican, and I am Black."

You can't win for losing when trying to put labels on people. You can't please everyone, but with just a little effort, you can succeed in pissing everyone off.

HaHa! Niece was dating a white guy that moved to the US from South Africa, getting his citizenship. He worked for a trucking company. His boss told everybody that he was his token African American. Blond hair and blue eyes. Lol.
