So I've been talking with one of the very few gun guys I know here at work, and he says he doesn't support the bill because he doesn't think people should carry if they don't have training to use their gun. Well, I can't say much about anyone else's experience but my carry class was pretty bare bones and almost entirely rehashed things I'd already learned from online.

It was mostly terms and definitions that could be learned anywhere else for free, but in less detail. The shooting portion had us prove we could hit a large target at 3 and 5 yards without being a danger to ourselves or others. Honestly, I don't think most of us came away knowing much more than we did going in, except for an older couple who had that day bought their first gun.

Just saying that this training people say others need to be allowed to defend themselves in public really isn't much training at all and the people who are already licenced aren't very different than those who would benefit from the bill should it become law. Honestly, using a gun is so incredibly easy there's no need for basic training required courses. Still worth learning the laws and such, but training should only be a recommended and optional thing.

$60 ain't getting you Jeff Cooper or John Farnam, that's for sure, even if Cooper were still among the living. It really points out the political issues that had to be worked through in the mid-90s to get this law kicked off originally. Politics is the art of the possible in that moment and today we are working with that structure in order to upgrade the law.

Sounds like the SDA class I went to, it was a joke. I saw a lady literally pull the trigger of her pretty little pink gun with both hands, not sure if she'd ever handled a gun before but no worries, 15 minutes later she walked out with a certificate.

But according to those that are experts, she went through a class.

Do you think people like that lady would ever have the notion to carry a gun around with them everywhere if they never heard that you could get a fancy license from the gubmint for it? If there were simply no laws against carrying weapons and it was treated as no big deal, like it has always been in Vermont, you wouldn't see near as much of this phenomenon where untrained/undertrained people get interested in carrying a gun and getting the CCL becomes a "fad" among certain segments of the population. For the most part, only people who take self defense very seriously would carry regularly... the type of people who train regularly and are probably a lot more proficient with a handgun than the average police officer. That is certainly the category most people I know who carry regularly fall into even under our current laws.

But the bottom line when it comes to all of this is that there should be no victimless crimes. It doesn't hurt or threaten anyone for a person to simply be in possession of a weapon, so it should not be prohibited. The only thing that should be prohibited regarding weapons is using them to initiate violence, placing people in imminent fear of having violence initiated against them, damaging other people's property with them, etc.

classroom portion was a joke. mostly him telling us why we needed the class...
we stood 3 feet from our targets, and did 5 reloads. i used my 1911, so that's 37 rounds or so. good enough for the instructor... but the class was only 5 bucks, so whatever.

My class was a complete joke, and the shooting portion was only 25 rounds. I loaded 10 in one mag and 15 in another, dumped both mags and left.
