I haven't met any experienced gun people that really supported it, so I didn't think it had much chance but it did look like it would go the distance. Bugs me that something could go so far and move on with such support from the house and Senate but just fail due to someone not caring or being worried about offending a basketball team.

Turn in the instructor who held the classes to the OSBI, as obviously he did not follow the state required curriculum.
Yes, please do. I've heard horror stories, you know where you sit on the floor of an "Instructor's" living room. He hands everyone the book and says "read this". He then gives you the test and everyone goes over it all at once. Then everyone goes out in the back yard and shoots 10 rounds at a target stapled to a stump. Done in 1 hour! UGH.......

The instructed I had told us there's not really a standard for the shooting portion. Not sure about the lecture, but I'd guess there's at least something for that. I mean there's gotta be right?

The guy is right. There is no standard for the shooting portion other than the student exhibits good range safety, listens to range commands.
You don't even have to hit the target.

Absolutely correct. On the other hand, do you REALLY want to live in a state where you have to score 70% on the NRA 50 yard target to get a carry license, like Rhode Island?

Everyone wanting to make the OK handgun class have stricter requirements, including marksmanship and shooting standards, STOP and think what you're saying! Consider Australia where you have to join a club and pass a test to BUY a handgun.

Everyone who thinks training is A wonderful thing that each individual should do, but does not want State-dictated standards for exercising a right, I'm with you.

Remember when Oklahoma first started concealed carry, CLEET favored having everyone pass their regular LEO training test. That was opposed by people like me, who have been in states with such idiotic requirements.

IMHO, the Oklahoma handgun class is "terrible" mostly because some have NO idea what it is supposed to accomplish. And about 10% of the students never have shot the gun they bring, or maybe never shot ANY handgun. Another 10% are hot shots who want the class to be a tactical shooting lesson. And CLEET demands the shooting portion stay in, but the legislature forbids shooting standards, due to public pressure against them. The SDA idea is simply to demonstrate handling the firearm safely.

IMHO, the Utah training course is the best I've taught or taken. It's about safety, it is BIG TIME about laws, and if you want to shoot, go take an NRA or other class on your own.
And BEST OF ALL, the students know up front there is NO shooting for the class, and tend to LISTEN and PARTICIPATE, instead of wasting their time OBSESSING ABOUT THE SHOOTING.

The Self Defense Act (21 O.S. 1290) does have a set of standards for instruction. Essentially there are two parts; legal and firearms.

I have found it entirely possible to instruct individuals in basic handgun safe use and application in the allowed time period. I do as much hands-on classroom and dryfire as possible to conserve time. I teach both loading and unloading double action revolvers and semi auto pistols in the classroom utilizing dummy ammo. I feel its important to introduce individuals to both since they are viable and commonly carried self defense handguns.

I tell students with no prior firearms experience to not worry about it; what they need to know will be revealed in class. I deliver on it.

As far as standards for live range go, i will not pass a student that is unsafe or cannot handle the firearm of their choice. Thus far I have been able to invite that rare student back for a 2 hour one-on-one remedial session and pass all the few who didn't initially pass.

I don't necessarily want CLEET to promulgate a minimum passing score on such and such a target. Too many issues including scoring irregularities and the like may result. The intent of 1290 is to have the student safe among the general public; the current standard allows that.

I do encourage refresher range time at least every 3 months (25 rounds minimum) as well as annual re-reading of the statutes.
