I'm a member. I can't say I agree with the constant requests for donations, but I strongly support our fundamental right to own firearms. The good out weighs the bad.
The NRA-ILA is funded separately from the NRA. You just need to give money to their ILA. Your membership in the NRA club doesn't help your gun rights at all.
The SAF did all the heavy lifting in Heller v DC, not the NRA. Now there's an organization worth supporting!
Lifetime member here too. I asked them about the constant mailings. They said it is a private company that takes a percentage of the donation. The mailing cost the NRA nothing. I don't completely agree with everything the do but strongly believe they generally have your best 2A rights in mind with most all the do.
GOA basically rides in the wake created by the NRA. I don't agree with them on everything but then again I don't agree with anyone on everything so why would that be significant? You also have to be extremely successful before "uncompromising" becomes a viable option - otherwise it is just cheap grandstanding.
Every other 2A Advocacy group owes a debt of gratitude to the NRA in general even if they have a bone to pick on specific issues.
I became an NRA member the day that Obama was elected because of his prior voting record related to gun rights, and for the fact that he has the Chicago gun mentality. I'm a member because they (NRA) are the only gun-rights group that have any power on the national scene. You never hear liberal senators and representatives complaining about the GOA, it's always the NRA. Do they annoy me at times, yes. Do I agree with them on everything? No. Do they do an overall good job for 2nd Amendment rights, absolutely. I'm sure the GOA does great things too, but not on the scale that the NRA does.
